The Mink system combats creasing by using brush strips placed around a circumference, with bundles of bristles angled outwards from the middle of the shaft. As the web makes contact with the bundles, a slight pushing of the bristles outwards is caused by the web tension. The spreading effect is then achieved, which only amounts to tenths of a millimetre per brush strip. The rotation of the spreader roll is said to ensure a continual repetition of this process, so that a constant and effective stretching results.

Web contact angles from 2-180 degree are possible, and a constant angle of spread across the whole length of the roll is said to allow optimal spreading of the web, unlike traditional rubber spreader rolls or the banana roller. Films as thin as eight micron and web widths up to four metres can be handled at high speeds, it is claimed. In addition to films, paper, textiles, cloth, rubber, and other web materials can be reliably spread and smoothed out, the company states, and the system can be installed in “almost all critical areas“.

Special versions include a fully bristled model in two diameters for film and paper webs, rolls with double angled bristling for multi slitting applications, and a system for high temperature operations.
