Papers all the way

The Speciality Paper Industry Conference 2008 is set to provide an interesting insight into this diverse market

Speciality papers are today a focus for growth in the paper industry – a reflection of their diversity and profitability, underscored by the price volatility of petrochemical based film substrates, to which they can often be a competitive alternative. These factors, advances in paper based packaging technology, and the growing emphasis on sustainability are driving growth in this sector for all levels of the value chain, from pulp and paper producers, through machinery manufacturers and converters, to distributors and end users.

AWA Conferences & Events established, speculatively, an international conference for the speciality paper market last year, and its success in terms of delegates' high attendance and positive response has led the company to hold the event again this year, from June 26-27, at the InterContinental Hotel in Berlin.

Following a turbulent year in oil pricing, and with profitability optimization through cost reduction a mission in virtually every industry, the Speciality Paper Industry Conference 2008 could provide an interesting insight into a market that has many positive features but also some negative issues.

Keynote presentations

The formal conference programme will examine markets, materials and technologies, with a special focus on today's prime opportunities, as well as the key issues faced by producers across the value chain. It will open with some macro keynote presentations on aspects of the speciality papers industry that will set the global context for the later sessions.

PricewaterhouseCoopers' director, global forest, paper and packaging, Ian Murdoch will open the programme with in-depth analysis of the industry's performance by region and key drivers, and will present a review of current status and challenges.

Corey M Reardon, president and ceo of AWA Alexander Watson Associates, will share his company's latest market research data on speciality papers. Maria Saloranta, a consultant with Pöyry Forest Industry Consulting Oy, aims to track the development of the industry's current global structure.

Marja Tuderman, vice president, environmental affairs and corporate CSR for UPM-Kymmene, will provide an overview of the industry's activity in the environment and corporate social responsibility arena. Sonali Advani, editor of Converting Today, will provide a guide to the emerging technologies in the industry.

The subsequent sessions will field an equally strong platform of speakers from international companies across a broad selection of market segments. Speakers in the second session will discuss the relative benefits of customization; performance improvement opportunities; ways to earn money with speciality papers; adding value with extrusion coating; C1S paper markets in Europe; and grease resistant papers.

In the final session, individual speaker topics will include papers for direct thermal print; laser marking of paper; intelligent classification for production optimization; innovations and challenges in papers for the wine labelling market; and the dynamic market in China.

The programme will be rounded off with a supplier forum session when sponsors and speakers have the opportunity to present short commercial 'snapshots' of their companies.

The conference is complemented by social networking opportunities during the cocktail party, concurrent tabletop exhibition, and conference dinner.

The Speciality Paper Industry Conference 2008 has the support of many industry leading organizations, including Converting Today, Mondi, and UPM-Kymmene.

The conference provides an opportunity for delegates to update themselves on a resurgent niche material sector that impacts many end-use markets. Full details of the conference programme are available on the AWA website where it is also possible to register online.
