Innovations in abundance at Interpack

16 April 2014

An appetiser for Interpack 2014 – the world’s leading packaging fair – which stages in Düsseldorf on 8-14 May

Some 2,700 exhibitors from more than 60 countries will present their latest technological developments at Interpack. Here is a selection of what will be on show.

Specialist manufacturer of customised product handling and printing systems for 3-D products the Apex Machine Co is to display its new S-11-C Strap Printer on stand B08-3, in Hall 12. Various automatic feeding systems and packaging lines can be integrated with the Apex to allow for a turnkey production cell inline with an automatic injection moulder or extrusion line. The S-11-C is said to provide the same high quality print as larger, more expensive machines "at great savings". Features include: 1-6 lanes, print in 1-3
colours, speeds of 300ft/min per lane, a 17 inch repeat pattern, and the ability to run either inline or offline. Apex will also show a wide range of packaging containers for food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical products printed using the latest technologies, including the innovative FlexApex process.

Exhibiting on stand A47 in Hall 16, Atlantic Zeiser will present its Digiline Compact system for late stage short run printing and encoding of variable data on flat cartons, cartonboard blanks and single sheets, such as sleeves and labels. The Digiline Compact is an entry-level, stand-alone system aimed at packaging companies and carton manufacturers, as well as service providers in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, FMCG (especially food and beverage), security printers, and small format commercial printers. It uses Atlantic Zeiser's proven Omega drop-on-demand printing technology and can process carton sizes from 45-430mm in length, and 64-368mm wide. An optional stand-alone camera for readability and quality control ensures that each sheet or box receives the intended personalisation or encoding; if it detects a missed print, the feeder is stopped immediately.

New from Clariant (stand E54 in Hall 10) will be the HiFormer liquid masterbatches system - a mix of consultancy, engineering and chemistry "to deliver world class performance, flexibility and excellence" for brand-owners and plastics processors, for most polymers and production processes.

US-based Delta Industrial Services is to demonstrate precision cutting and precise part placement on stand DO7 in Hall 16. The company will run a 'challenging' polyurethane film on its Delta Mod-Tech custom converter system, featuring a variety of processes including multiple rotary diecuts, tight registration and lamination capabilities. Visitors are invited to bring their specific application requirements, so that Delta can help them design a manufacturing and/or packaging solution. Custom systems may include a variety of capabilities such as semirotary, full rotary and laser cutting, punching, embossing and heatseal packaging. Delta offers manufacturing solutions for complex medical, pharmaceutical, label, security, RFID, packaging and cosmetic products. The Mod-Tech system is custom designed and engineered to meet application requirements.

The new Intarema K automatic plastics recycling system will make its debut on Erema's stand D70 in Hall 11. The successor to the KAG system designed especially for recycling PE edge trim through a short extruder, it promises a further boost in efficiency. New features include Counter Current patented core technology, the energy saving ecoSAVE system including direct drive and, for the first time, a touchscreen, and the Smart Start System for greater userfriendliness.

Innovia Films, producer of biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) and cellulose films for packaging, labelling and overwrapping, promises some "exciting new developments", including the launch of a hermetically sealing film in its compostable, cellulose-based NatureFlex range. Visitors to the stand (9F04 in Hall 9) will also be able to discover more about the company's material partnerships with key players in the packaging industry.

In Hall 8A, on stand F05-G03, the Marchesini Group will show for the first time the Stery Capsy sterile line, and the new ML618 monobloc, equipped with 18 filling heads and two capping turrets to handle syrup vials. There will also be the FSP05 machine for filling and stoppering disposable syringes, and the new Unica, a robotised line for syringe packing that integrates in a single block the deep draw thermoforming and the carton packaging.

Last year, Rofin introduced the StarMAP smart software solution for designing the optimum in micro-perforation based on the oxygen transmission rates of the packed product and individual storage conditions. Now the company claims to offer the first "true real-time" monitoring of perforation hole diameter and percentage roundness, with the VisionPerfoControl. Each laser perforation head will be fitted with a camera, the output of which is processed using pattern recognition software to record the dimensions of the holes accurately. This allows for validation of the micro-perforation process and eliminates the possibility of incorrect setup spoiling the output from the perforation system. Hall 8A, stand F04.

The PP*Star sustainable packaging concept will take centre stage in the Starlinger exhibit (Hall 11, stand C20). The new pinch bottom bag is said to combine material savings, product protection and attractive presentation. Made from a composite of polypropylene tape fabric and reverse printed OPP film, the bags are both lightweight "extremely durable and tear-resistant". Starlinger says they are especially suitable for sensitive bulk goods such as pet food or fertiliser.

On stand C10 in Hall 7a, Sun Chemical will demonstrate the services of its packaging brand life cycle management agency, Sun Branding Solutions (SBS). Brand-owners can create "an engaging packaging design that stands out on the shelf, maintains brand
colour consistency every time, utilises special effect inks and coatings and complies with low migration regulations". SBS can also determine the right packaging structure for the specific needs of each customer. In addition, Sun Chemical will help visitors explore brand protection options to ensure the integrity of their packaging. The company offers a variety of covert, overt and semi-overt options to maintain brand integrity. Among the security solutions is Verigard infra-red coding, which adds a small quantity of taggants, or chemical markers, to inks, varnishes or coatings for use in any print process on any substrate.

Water vapour permeation and oxygen permeation analysers which offer testing for many different packaging applications are the
speciality of Systech. Its oxygen permeation analysers offer reliable and versatile testing for bottles, packages and films - providing extremely fast purge downtime and accurate readings at the lowest levels". Also, on display will be oxygen and carbon dioxide headspace gas analysers for use in the food and pharmaceutical packaging industry. Hall 5, stand A29.

Travtec/Sunala (Hall 4, stand E39/04) will demonstrate its FMD-ready solutions to help manufacturers prepare for the requirements of the forthcoming EC Falsified Medicines Directive. The Lixis PVS vision system is a high-end OCR/OCV imaging system for a wide variety of inspection requirements throughout the packaging process. Its character recognition software reads both preprinted and in-line printing and automatically detects shift or rotation variations. Colour verification can also be specified. All types of barcodes can be monitored, and the system can be programmed to check the accuracy of logos and artwork, and to ascertain the presence
and position of labels, caps and other items.

The comprehensive portfolio of positive displacement pump and tubing technology specialist Watson-Marlow Pumps Group (WMPG) now includes BioPure's advanced single-use tubing connector systems for biopharmaceutical applications. Bio Pure is
said to "ease customer validation in demanding contamination-free dispensing applications and offer improved sterility for critical applications". Stand A24, Hall 16.
