CMM International offers all the various converting segments in one event. The exhibition and conference runs April 18-21, at Chicago's McCormick Place South

Among the exhibits, Accuweb (booth 1661) is showcasing its web guide technology: WideArray edge detectors, AccuBeam II line guides, Micro1000 and Micro4000 NET controllers, and custom guide assemblies. The company will stage demonstrations of web width monitoring and electronic adjustment of the guide point within 36.8in of WideArray detection range. Electro-mechanical actuators will also be displayed.

The 400mm diameter S-Tec roll slitter is being introduced by ALS. This precision automatic roll slitter includes an automatic blade grinder with options for automatic pivoting blade angle and powered mandrel support. According to ALS, the machine has been designed to maximize yields and minimize waste. Special care has been taken to protect key components from the corrosive water based blade lubricants to extend its working life and reduce maintenance costs. This model is suitable for slitting standard adhesive products, sign vinyl, and a wide range of technical materials. It is available with 1, 2 and 3in mandrels, and in widths from 1,600-2,100mm. The machine is totally guarded to protect the operator from any eventuality. Booth 3001.

Ashe Converting Equipment is to display the Sapphire S2 duplex slitter rewinder, which was launched at drupa. The company claims it is now out-selling main competitors' duplex centre winders because of its technical advantages such as a 700m/min speed, a shaftless shear slitting section, an all-electric shaftless unwind stand, and a vacuum hug drum for the main pull roller. Other features include a full colour PC touchscreen with an easy set-up menu. Booth 1274.

AVT (booth 2876) will demonstrate the PrintVision/Jupiter process control and press control solution; the PrintVision/Argus, with new colour LCCD camera, "providing the highest level of combined process control and automatic 100 per cent quality assurance inspection"; and the PrintVision/Helios platform for label printing applications. All of these are designed as 'open systems' to accommodate a wide range of optional modules. The Prestige press control package provides solutions said to automatically handle all makeready tasks and control associated press parameters during the run. Three modules offer automatic register pre-setting and control; automatic plate and anilox pressure pre-setting and control; and in-line colour measurement.

In booth 3564, new products from Bobst will include the Rotomec RS 4004 gravure press for short and medium run production of a wide range of flexible materials, and Schiavi's EF 4040 press with Universal Deck application and CL 660 Unica multifunction coater-laminator. The latest from Titan are the CT610 automatic turret slitter rewinder and the SR8 cantilever slitter rewinder. General will feature the Holosec vacuum web coater for small batch sizes and high value production.

New from BST International is the Premius digital 3 Chip – "the world's first web inspection and print process management system to use a digital three-chip camera". The new system is also said to be the first to integrate digital camera technology, a digital interface, three-chip resolution and an extra large field-of-view. This combination of state-of-the-art technologies is said to allow the Premius Chip "to harness the full power of process management as never before, while making huge strides in operator functionality and ease of use". For example: defect detection on the entire repeat can now be performed four times faster than before. The amount of material inspected is also improved by a factor of four. Defects are found and corrected far more quickly, resulting in less waste and greater productivity from the press. Also new is the PROScan 3000 video web inspection system, with a number of innovations to save time and make on-press quality control easier and more efficient. The booth number is 3231.

Comexi (booth 1555) supplier of CI presses for the flexible packaging industry, will be introducing to North America its new 8 and 10 colour presses — the FW 1508 and the FI 2510/2910. On display also will be a new Eikon slitter from Comexi Group member Proslit.

Davis-Standard will exhibit in booth 1618. The company's team of flexible packaging experts will be available to discuss a range of cast film, blown film and extrusion coating technology. Displayed in photographs will be new systems for cast coextrusion for widths of 5.3m; high barrier nine-layer films and extrusion; and flexible, high barrier packaging laminating systems capable of 760m/min. Also featured will be versatile paper and board coating to 600m/min, woven and non woven fabric technology, and scrapless winding for hygienic films. In addition, the company will introduce its development and demonstration line for cast coating and laminating, including in-line compounding and orientation.

In addition to displaying total tension across a web, the T115 shows actual tension at either edge of the web. The WebHandler3 tension controller version 3.2 offers "customer-driven enhancements" such as an optional Profibus serial interface. The DC2 is said to be a low cost, easy-to-install dancer controller. Booth 1876.

Durable dies

EDI, exhibiting in booth 1621, will highlight new tungsten carbide and chromium nitride surface technologies said to make the lips of its Ultracoat proximity coating dies smoother, flatter, sharper, and more wear resistant. They are claimed to enable converters to enhance product quality, save on raw material, and reduce downtime for die cleaning or repair. According to Jeff Seckora, product manager: "Because worn lip edges lead to build-up that causes coating defects, the converter must periodically take the die off-line to clean and sharpen the lips, a process that takes at least a day and may cost thousands of dollars in lost output. By comparison, the working life of a tungsten carbide lip edge is measured in years. The material is simply the hardest we've ever used. The smoother, flatter, and sharper the lips of the die, the greater the converter's control over the thickness and consistency of the coating being applied," he says.

Elsner, exhibiting in booth 2309, will be introducing several machines. The AFR-18 is an automatic high speed rewinder for converting household kitchen rolls of foil, food (cling) film, and baking, waxed and silicone coated papers - all on the same machine - at 48 rolls/min. The EWR-760 high speed automatic rewinder will convert sidewall rolls at 30/min. The ENR-760 non wovens rewinder can produce consumer-sized perforated rolls and large rolls up to 25cm in diameter. The CWF-2-400 cosmetic cross-wipe folder offers variable stack counts and cross-folding without the use of vacuum. The F-800 wipe folder with servo-driven modular tucking stations and interchangeable length fold ploughs can achieve a multitude of fold styles for larger products such as non woven table covers. The ERI-50 canister loader provides automatic insertion of rolled wipes into plastics canisters to complete a turnkey wipes operation.

Enercon's exhibit (booth 1421) is to offer visitors a first hand look at "revolutionary" atmospheric plasma technology, new powerful corona treatment electrodes, developments with PowerFlame surface treaters, and the introduction of a tension tuner "that allows converters to scientifically predict desired web tensions". The company will be exhibiting a new concept for trialling atmospheric plasma and corona applications. In conjunction with Sigma Technologies, it has developed systems for applications requiring stringent surface specifications, improved hydrophilicity and precise surface coating performance. The booth will also feature the new Elite Series electrode with 40 per cent greater treatment capacity.

Fischer & Krecke (booth 1859) will demonstrate the latest technology available with its gearless, sleeve based Flexpresses, including the "money saving" Flexpress View web based service and maintenance system.

In booth 3516 the Graymills Corp is displaying splash resistant peristaltic pumps said to have advanced features. Included is a new bearing housing for quick demountable centrifugal ink pumps, claimed to offer longer bearing life, cooler running and easy wash-up. An ink tank dolly permits hand or machine wash-up without damaging castors. Peristaltic, centrifugal, diaphragm ink pumps, filter, mixers and Brookfield viscosity controls for narrow to wide web, envelope, corrugated and gravure applications can also be found in this exhibit.

Harper Corp of America will share booth 1612 with Harper GraphicSolutions, the company's technical problem solving team, and its German partner, carbon fibre roll producer Inometa. The two companies announced a new venture last April, named Harper Graphics, which currently markets Harper's exclusive anilox roll technology in Europe, as well as HarperScientific flexo supply products, and offers Harper GraphicSolutions' technical consulting expertise. Harper Graphics will begin manufacturing anilox rolls in Herford, Germany, in late 2005. HarperScientific will display directly across from Harper Corp in booth 1610.

The UV inks are said to be formulated to provide exceptional flow, colour consistency and transfer properties on a wide range of substrates in narrow web tag and label, folding carton, single serve and special applications. They are also said to be ideal for combination printing. The SpH inks offer a new technology in pH stability designed to "drastically reduce the need to constantly monitor and adjust pH levels in water based inks while continuing to deliver top line-performance for corrugated packaging applications". Labour savings, reduced downtime, improved output quality and eased environmental concerns are promised across applications including corrugated, envelope, tag and label, folding cartons, napkins and paper plates.

Jennerjahn Machine (booth 1020) is featuring its 'next generation' of fully automated slittter rewinders for the film and flexible packaging industry - the JPX model. In the same exhibit P&S, of Germany, will also exhibit its new packaging system for plotter and inkjet rolls. This system can be easily integrated with Jennerjahn's JLS slitter rewinders, or the new JPX model. POS rolls can be packaged with the P&S sleeve wrapper and roll handling systems, at up to 200 rolls/min for a maximum roll diameter of 8in.
